Seasonal Decorating on a Budget: A 12-Month Calendar
Seasonal decor on a budget, month by month: what to decorate, when to start, when to shop the sales, and one reusable core kit for every US holiday.
Under $100 · Renter-safe · Easy · 1–2 hours per seasonal swapUpdated

In this post
Seasonal decor on a budget comes down to three habits: buy a neutral core kit once, swap a few cheap accents for each holiday, and shop for next year in the clearance week after this one. Do that and a full year of holidays, from Thanksgiving to Halloween, costs less than one big-box Christmas haul.
This calendar runs from November 2026 through October 2027. For each month you get what to decorate, when to start, what to buy on sale, and a link to the full guide for that holiday. Every date below was checked against published 2026–2027 calendars.
You'll also find a cost table for the core kit and the swap packs, a storage system that fits under a bed, and the fire-safety basics from the U.S. Fire Administration.
The Year at a Glance

The Core Kit: Decorate Once, Swap All Year
The core kit is the part of your decor that never leaves. It's neutral on purpose, so it works under red, blue, green, pastel or orange.
Think of it as a stage. Each holiday adds two to four props, then those props go back in their bin.
What goes in the kit
- Light: two or three strands of battery LED string lights with a timer, plus three flameless pillar candles.
- Base: one neutral table runner and one tray. The tray corrals a vignette so it reads as decor, not clutter.
- Containers: three clear glass vases. Fill them with branches in winter, tulips in spring, mini flags in July and pumpkins in fall.
- Green: one faux eucalyptus or greenery garland. It drapes over a mirror, a shelf edge or the middle of the runner.
- Door: one plain grapevine or wire wreath form and an over-the-door hanger. Tie on ribbon, picks or paper shapes for each holiday.
Why neutral works
Cream, oatmeal, wood, brass and sage sit quietly under any accent color. Red ornaments, blue Hanukkah ribbon, pastel eggs and black Halloween bats all look intentional on the same jute runner.
The trade-off: a neutral base can feel a little plain between holidays. Fix that with a seasonal branch or a bowl of real fruit, which costs a few dollars and goes in the compost after.

Core kit and swap pack costs
Every price below is a typical shelf range for a generic item at a named US retailer. The core kit is a one-time spend; the swap packs repeat yearly only if you don't store them well.

You don't need every swap pack. Pick the holidays your household actually celebrates, and skip the rest without guilt.
How to Use This Calendar: Our 6–10 Week Rule
Our planning rule is to start thinking about a holiday 6–10 weeks before it arrives. That isn't a law of nature; it's simply enough time to shop your own bins, notice what's missing and catch a sale instead of paying full price the week before.
Here's the rhythm for each holiday:
- 6–10 weeks out: open last year's bin. Toss broken pieces. Pick a color story of one accent plus your neutrals.
- 3–5 weeks out: buy only the gaps. Dollar Tree, Walmart and Target restock seasonal aisles well ahead of each holiday.
- 1–2 weeks out: decorate. December holidays usually go up after Thanksgiving, but follow your own traditions.
- Within a week after: take it down, wipe it off, and pack it in a labeled bin. Then check the clearance aisle for next year's gaps.
November 2026: Thanksgiving and Black Friday
Dates: Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30.
What to decorate: the table, the entry and one window. Fall decor from October rolls straight into Thanksgiving if you pull the Halloween pieces and keep the pumpkins, leaves and warm candles.
Budget move: mini pumpkins, dried stems and cloth napkins on the core runner make a full table. Our $40 Dollar Tree Thanksgiving table prices every piece. If you're hosting friends in a small space, the Friendsgiving decor guide covers folding seating and a table that fits in a studio.
Buy on sale: Black Friday is a good time for bigger, non-seasonal items such as rugs, lamps and storage. Read Black Friday home decor: what to buy and what to skip before you fill a cart. If you plan to buy an artificial tree, compare prices that week using the artificial Christmas tree buying guide.
Hosting guests? The holiday guest room guide shows how to make a couch or office feel like a guest room for a few nights.
December 2026: Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa
December holds three holidays with very different meanings. Decorate for the ones you celebrate, and learn the symbols before you buy, so your decor honors the tradition instead of guessing at it.
Hanukkah: December 4–12, 2026
Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, 2026, and lasts eight nights. The menorah used for Hanukkah (a hanukkiah) holds nine candles: one for each night plus the helper candle, the shamash, used to light the others.
Blue and silver are the familiar decor colors, and they look crisp on a neutral base. Our DIY Hanukkah decor guide has ten projects in the $25–$50 range, from paper Star of David garlands to a dreidel centerpiece.
Safety note: a menorah burns real flames. Set it on a stable, nonflammable surface and keep it at least 12 inches from anything that burns, which is USFA's candle guidance.
Christmas: December 25, 2026
For Christmas, the core kit does most of the work. Add ornaments to the glass vases, wrap the greenery garland in lights, and tie a red ribbon on the wreath form.
In a small apartment, read Christmas decor for small apartments for tree alternatives and no-nail hanging. For gifts that won't blow the budget, the home decor gifts under $25 list stays in the same price range as everything here.
Kwanzaa: December 26, 2026 – January 1, 2027
Kwanzaa runs seven days, from December 26 through January 1. Each day honors one of the seven principles, the Nguzo Saba: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith).
The table display centers on the kinara, a candle holder for seven candles: one black, three red and three green. A woven mat, fresh fruit or ears of corn, and a unity cup complete it.
Our upcoming Kwanzaa decor DIY guide walks through a meaningful table on a budget. Buying from Black-owned makers fits the principle of Ujamaa.
Buy on sale: after-Christmas clearance typically starts December 26. That's the week to buy ribbon, ornaments, gift wrap and storage bins for next year. Don't buy trees or big lit pieces unless you've already measured where they'll live.

January 2027: New Year's, Winter Reset and White Sales
Dates: New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027.
New Year's Eve: gold balloons, a star garland and the string lights you already own make a party corner for under $15. The New Year's Eve party at home guide has a $50 plan with food and drinks setup.
The winter reset: once the holiday bins go back in the closet, a bare room can feel cold. Keep the greenery garland, the candles and a bowl of pine cones. Our guide to winter decor after Christmas shows how to stay cozy for $0–$50 through February.
Buy on sale: January white sales typically run from late December through the end of January. They're a traditional time for bedding, towels and storage. See January white sales: what's actually worth buying for a list of what tends to be worth it.
February 2027: Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day and the Super Bowl
February 2027 is busy, so plan this month in early December.
Lunar New Year: Saturday, February 6, 2027
Lunar New Year 2027 begins on Saturday, February 6, and starts the Year of the Goat.
Red is widely associated with luck and celebration, and gold is a common accent. Red paper lanterns, red envelopes and a bowl of tangerines or oranges on the core tray make a simple, respectful display. If your family celebrates, follow your own family's customs; they vary by region and culture.
Valentine's Day and Super Bowl LXI: Sunday, February 14, 2027
In 2027, Valentine's Day and the Super Bowl land on the same Sunday. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
You can decorate for both with one budget. Our Super Bowl meets Valentine's party guide shows how to blend team colors with a red-and-pink snack table. For a quieter day, the Valentine's Day decor DIY ideas under $20 cover paper hearts, wreath-form swaps and a candlelit table.
Buy on sale: Valentine's merchandise usually goes on clearance the day after. Red ribbon, heart garland and pink napkins bought then can double as next year's Lunar New Year or Christmas accents.
March 2027: St. Patrick's Day, Spring and Easter
Dates: St. Patrick's Day is Wednesday, March 17. Spring begins around March 20. Easter is early this year: Sunday, March 28, 2027.
St. Patrick's Day
Green ribbon on the wreath form, a few shamrock picks in a glass vase and a small potted plant are plenty. See St. Patrick's Day decor from Dollar Tree for under-$25 ideas. Dollar Tree prices most items at $1.25, with some higher price points from $1.50 to $5, so check tags.
Spring refresh
Swap the winter greenery for faux or fresh tulips and lighter pillow covers. The spring decor on a budget weekend plan breaks it into one weekend. Renters who want to clean and declutter first can follow the renter's 7-day spring reset.
Easter
With Easter on March 28, spring and Easter decor overlap almost entirely. Speckled eggs in a glass vase, pastel napkins and a nest of moss on the tray do the job. The Easter decor DIY with Dollar Tree supplies guide has centerpieces for adults, not just kids.
Buy on sale: Easter clearance typically starts the day after. Pastel ribbon, faux flowers and egg garlands work again for spring and Mother's Day.

April 2027: Earth Day and Thrift Season
Date: Earth Day is Thursday, April 22, 2027.
April has no big decorating holiday, which makes it the right month to fix the gaps in your core kit secondhand. Thrift stores often stock glass vases, brass candlesticks, baskets and trays for a few dollars each.
Use Earth Day as a prompt. Try the Earth Day thrift flip challenge, and read what to buy at the thrift store for decor before you go. Reusing what you have is the cheapest seasonal decor there is.
May 2027: Mother's Day and Memorial Day
Dates: Mother's Day is Sunday, May 9, 2027. Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2027.
Mother's Day
A grocery-store bouquet split across the three core vases looks like far more flowers than it is. Add a printed menu card and cloth napkins. The Mother's Day brunch tablescape under $40 has a full shopping list.
Memorial Day
Memorial Day honors those who died in military service. Decor tends to be simple: a flag displayed respectfully, red, white and blue on the porch, and the outdoor season opening up. The Memorial Day patio kickoff guide covers getting a small patio ready for the summer.
Buy on sale: Memorial Day weekend sales typically focus on outdoor furniture, grills and mattresses. If you need a bistro set or outdoor rug, this is a reasonable weekend to compare prices.
June 2027: Juneteenth, Father's Day and Summer Porches
Dates: Juneteenth is Saturday, June 19. Father's Day is Sunday, June 20, 2027.
June is a light decorating month. Move the string lights outside to a balcony or porch (only if they're rated for outdoor use), swap the runner for a striped cotton one, and fill the vases with greenery from the yard or the grocery store.
The summer porch decor on a budget guide covers planters, a doormat swap and outdoor lighting.
July 2027: Independence Day
Date: July 4, 2027, falls on a Sunday. The federal holiday is observed on Monday, July 5.
Paper bunting on a porch rail, mini flags in a glass vase and star-print napkins on the core runner make a full display for about $5–$15. Our 4th of July DIY decor ideas cover the door, porch and table.
Buy on sale: patriotic decor typically hits clearance right after July 4. Keep red, white and blue pieces in the same bin as Memorial Day so you buy them once.

August 2027: Back-to-School and the End of Summer
Back-to-school shopping season typically runs from late June into early September. For decor, it's a good time to buy storage, desk lamps and bins at sale prices.
Set up a family drop zone with hooks and a calendar using the back-to-school command center guide. Heading to college? Dorm room on a budget covers a full room on a student budget.
Seasonal tip: stores often set out fall and Halloween stock in late summer. Browse, note prices, and hold off on buying until you've checked your own fall bin.
September 2027: Labor Day and the First Days of Fall
Date: Labor Day is Monday, September 6, 2027.
Labor Day weekend sales typically include furniture, mattresses and outdoor clearance. Read Labor Day sales: what to buy for your home (and skip) before you shop.
September is also the bridge month. Keep the summer greenery, swap the pillow covers to warmer tones, and add one fall accent at a time. The summer-to-fall decor swap guide lists ten changes under $10 each.
October 2027: Fall and Halloween
Date: Halloween is Sunday, October 31, 2027. Thanksgiving 2027 follows on Thursday, November 25.
Fall decor can run from mid-September straight through Thanksgiving, which makes it one of the better values in the calendar. The Dollar Tree fall decor guide shows how to make wreath forms, pumpkins and stems look like pricier pieces. For the porch, see the fall front porch under $75.
For Halloween, add black and orange accents to the fall base, then pull them out on November 1 and keep the pumpkins for Thanksgiving. Renters should read renter-friendly Halloween decor for indoor and outdoor ideas that leave no marks.
Halloween safety (CPSC): keep candles and jack-o'-lanterns away from landings and doorsteps, where costumes could brush the flame. Indoors, keep them away from curtains and decorations. Use light strands tested by a recognized testing laboratory, and check every set for cracked sockets or frayed wires. A battery tealight in a pumpkin removes the risk.
Buy on sale: Halloween clearance typically starts November 1. Buy faux pumpkins, black candlesticks and orange string lights then for next year.

When to Buy on Sale: The Clearance Calendar
Clearance is where seasonal decor on a budget pays off. The pattern is simple: stores mark down seasonal stock once the holiday passes, because they need the shelf space for the next one.
Here's the typical cycle. Exact dates and discounts vary by store and year, so check your local shelves.
- Day after the holiday: clearance usually starts after Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, July 4 and Halloween.
- Late December through January: white sales on bedding, towels and storage bins.
- Holiday-weekend sales: Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day weekends typically feature furniture, mattresses and outdoor pieces.
- Black Friday and Cyber Monday: November 27 and 30, 2026. Better for lamps, rugs and storage than for seasonal decor itself.
Clearance rules that save money
- Buy only for a gap you already wrote down. A clearance haul you don't need isn't a bargain.
- Prefer neutral or reusable pieces. Gold ribbon works for Christmas, New Year's and Hanukkah accents; "Happy 2027" signs work once.
- Skip anything fragile or bulky unless you already have a bin and a shelf for it.
- Check lights before buying. Look for a testing-lab mark on the box and skip any strand with damaged packaging.
Splurge vs. Save Across the Year
Spend on the pieces you'll use every month, and save on the accents that come and go.
| Item | Save | Splurge |
|---|---|---|
| Flameless candles | Basic LED pillars, $8–$20 for 3 (Walmart, IKEA) | Real-wax LED pillars with remote and timer, $30–$60 (Target, HomeGoods) |
| Table runner | Cotton or jute, $8–$20 (Target, Walmart) | Linen runner, $30–$60 (Pottery Barn, West Elm) |
| Greenery garland | Dollar Tree stems tied together, about $5–$10 | Realistic faux eucalyptus garland, $30–$70 (Target, HomeGoods) |
| Holiday accents | Dollar Tree swap pack, $4–$15 | Boutique ornaments or ceramics, $25–$80 (HomeGoods, Etsy) |
| Storage | Clear lidded bins, $4–$12 each (Walmart, IKEA) | Fabric-lined ornament chest, $30–$60 (Target, The Container Store) |
How to Store Seasonal Decor Cheaply
The cheapest decor is the decor you don't have to buy twice. Good storage protects your swap packs and makes next year's 6–10 week check a five-minute job.
One bin per season
Use clear lidded plastic bins, one per season or holiday cluster:
- Fall and Thanksgiving
- Halloween
- December holidays (split Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa into separate inner bags so sacred items aren't jumbled with novelty decor)
- Winter and New Year's
- Spring, Easter and Mother's Day
- Summer, Memorial Day and July 4
In a small apartment, you can combine bins 4–6 into one. Valentine's, St. Patrick's and Lunar New Year accents are small enough to share a shoebox.
The label system
Label every bin on two sides, the short end and the lid, so you can read it on a shelf or in a stack. Each label gets three lines:
- Season or holiday (for example, "Spring + Easter")
- Room where most of it goes ("dining table, front door")
- Top 5 contents plus "missing or broken" notes for next year
Tape a small inventory list inside the lid. When you open the bin in 6–10 weeks, that list is your shopping list.
Packing tips
- Wrap glass and ceramics in acid-free tissue or old towels, not newspaper, which can transfer ink.
- Wind string lights around a piece of cardboard so they don't tangle.
- Bag small pieces like picks, clings and dreidels in labeled zip-top bags.
- Store wreaths in a wreath bag, hanging flat or on a closet hook.
- Keep batteries out of flameless candles and lights, or they can leak and corrode the contacts.
Where to put the bins in a small space
- Under the bed: low, wide bins on wheels.
- Top closet shelf: the off-season bins you won't touch for months.
- Behind the couch or inside an ottoman: the current or next season's bin.
The tiny bedroom layout and storage guide has more space-finding tricks.

Holiday Safety: What USFA Says
Seasonal decor brings extra candles, cords and heat sources into small rooms. These facts come from the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and NFPA.
Candles
- Almost half of home decoration fires in December are started by candles, and Christmas is the peak day for candle fires (USFA/NFPA).
- Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns, in stable holders that can't be knocked over.
- Blow candles out when you leave a room or go to bed. Don't use lit candles in bedrooms, bathrooms or sleeping areas.
- Consider battery-operated flameless candles, which USFA says can look, smell and feel like real candles.
Trees and heat sources
- More than 1 in 5 Christmas tree fires were caused by a heat source too close to the tree (USFA/NFPA).
- Keep a tree at least 3 feet from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles and heat vents, and make sure it doesn't block an exit.
- Water a real tree every day; a dry tree can burn very hot and very fast. Get rid of it after Christmas or when it's dry.
- Keep anything that can burn, including throws, garland and paper decor, at least 3 feet from heaters. Turn space heaters off when you leave the room or go to bed.
Lights
- Inspect holiday lights every year before you put them up, and throw away strands with frayed or pinched wires.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for how many strands to connect.
- Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems (USFA, citing NFPA).
These rules apply all year: Hanukkah candles, Kwanzaa candles, Diwali lamps, birthday tables and Halloween pumpkins all deserve the same 12 inches of clearance.
Renter-Friendly Version
Every idea in this calendar works without nails. The core kit lives on surfaces, the wreath hangs on an over-the-door hanger, and garland goes on a tension rod or removable hooks. For more methods, see how to hang things without nails and our renter decorating guide.
Common Mistakes
- Buying a full new theme every year. Swap accents, not the base.
- Shopping the week before. That's when seasonal aisles are fullest and at full price.
- Packing up without notes. If you don't write down what broke, you'll buy the wrong things next year.
- Storing decor in a damp garage. Fabric and paper pieces mildew; keep bins inside where humidity is lower.
- Leaving batteries in. Leaky batteries can ruin flameless candles and light strands in storage.
- Mixing meaningful and novelty items. Keep a menorah, a kinara or heirloom ornaments in their own padded box.
Your Next Step
Pick the next holiday on this calendar, open your bin, and write down what's missing. Then buy the core kit pieces you don't have, one at a time, using the clearance calendar above.

Frequently asked questions
How can I decorate for every holiday on a budget?
Build a neutral core kit once (string lights, flameless candles, a runner, glass vases, greenery garland, a wreath form and a tray), then buy a small swap pack of two to four accents per holiday. Most of what you own then stays out or gets reused, and only the small accents change.
When is the best time to buy holiday decorations on sale?
Clearance usually starts right after each holiday, so the days after Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter and July 4 are when seasonal stock gets marked down. Exact timing and discounts vary by store. Buy next year's accents then, and store them with the matching kit.
How do you store seasonal decorations in a small apartment?
Use clear lidded bins, one per season, labeled on two sides with the season, room and contents. Store them under a bed, on a closet shelf or in a vertical stack. Keep them somewhere dry, since EPA advises indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%.
How far in advance should you start decorating for a holiday?
Our planning rule is to start 6–10 weeks ahead: pick a color story and check your bins first, then buy only the gaps two to four weeks out. Put the decor up one to two weeks before smaller holidays and after Thanksgiving for December holidays, or whenever your traditions say.
What colors work for decorating all year round?
Warm neutrals such as cream, oatmeal, wood tones, brass and sage green sit under almost any holiday color. Red works for Christmas, Lunar New Year and Valentine's; blue and silver for Hanukkah; black, red and green for Kwanzaa; and orange for fall.
Are flameless candles safe to leave on?
Battery-operated flameless candles remove the open flame, which is why the U.S. Fire Administration suggests them. Use ones with a timer, keep batteries out of reach of kids and pets, and turn them off when you go out, as you would any electrical decoration.
