A bedroom makeover under $100 works when you spend on the three things you see and touch most: the bed, the light and one big visual change. Skip the cart full of small decor. Pick one of the three plans below, buy only what's on its list, and finish in a weekend.
Each plan has an itemized budget table with price ranges at Walmart, Target, IKEA, Dollar Tree and secondhand sources. Plan A makes the room feel like a hotel.
Plan B makes it feel calm and edited. Plan C adds color with a painted nightstand and a peel-and-stick panel behind the bed.
All three are renter-friendly. For other rooms and the full shopping method, start with the pillar guide on how to decorate on a budget.
Before You Spend: 30 Free Minutes
Every plan works better on a clean slate. Before you buy anything:
- Clear the nightstands and dresser top. Keep a lamp, one book and a small tray. Everything else goes in a drawer or out of the room.
- Strip and wash the bedding. Even old sheets look better pressed or steamed and pulled tight.
- Measure three things: the bed width, the window (width plus the distance from the top of the frame to the ceiling) and the wall behind the bed. Write them in your phone.
- Shop the house. A lamp from the living room or a frame from the hallway costs nothing.
If the room is so small that nothing fits, fix the layout first. The tiny bedroom layout and storage guide covers bed placement and storage that frees up floor space.
Plan A: Hotel-Cozy
This plan is for a bedroom that feels cold, bare or mismatched. It spends most of the money on the bed, then warms the light and the floor.
Budget breakdown: Plan A: Hotel-cozy ($55–$100)
$55–$100
| Item | Price range | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Duvet cover or comforter in one solid color, full/queen | $20–$32 | Walmart, IKEA, Target |
| Two throw pillow covers plus inserts (one texture, one pattern) | $8–$14 | Target, Walmart, HomeGoods |
| Knit or waffle-weave throw blanket | $8–$14 | Walmart, Target, HomeGoods |
| Bedside lamp (thrifted or basic new) | $3–$12 | Thrift stores, IKEA, Walmart |
| Warm white LED bulbs, 2700K (2-pack) | $4–$8 | Walmart, Home Depot, IKEA |
| Flat-weave rug, about 3 x 5 ft, for one side of the bed | $12–$20 | Walmart, IKEA, Target |
| Total | $55–$100 |
Prices are approximate as of October 2026 and vary by store and region. Prices are approximate as of October 2026, for generic item types at the stores listed. Most Dollar Tree items are $1.25, with some at $1.50–$5. Thrift and Facebook Marketplace prices vary widely by city and condition.
Time: about 2–3 hours, mostly shopping and laundry.
What to buy and where
- Bedding in one solid color. Oatmeal, warm white, rust or olive hide wrinkles better than bright white. Walmart and IKEA carry basic duvet covers and comforters in the $20–$32 range for full or queen. Wash before using.
- Two throw pillows that don't match each other. One should be textured (bouclé, waffle, chunky knit) and one patterned (a stripe or small check). Covers plus inserts at Target or HomeGoods usually land in the $8–$14 range for two if you buy covers on sale and cheap inserts.
- A throw blanket. Fold it in thirds lengthwise and lay it across the foot of the bed. That one move makes a made bed look styled.
- A bedside lamp. Thrift stores sell plain ceramic and glass lamps for a few dollars. Check the cord for cracks and test it in the store if they let you.
- Warm bulbs and a small rug. A 3 x 5 ft flat-weave rug on the side you get out of bed gives your feet somewhere warm to land.
The trade-off
Under $32, bedding will be microfiber or a thin cotton blend. It pills faster and sleeps warmer than percale. Spend more here if you can, and save on the rug.

Plan B: Calm Minimal
This plan is for a room that feels busy, cluttered or chaotic. Most of the change is free: you take things away, then buy a few items that make what's left look deliberate.
Budget breakdown: Plan B: Calm minimal ($58–$100)
$58–$100
| Item | Price range | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Matching slim hangers (30–50 pack) | $10–$18 | Walmart, Target, Amazon |
| Two linen-look curtain panels, 84 or 95 in. | $20–$30 | Walmart, IKEA, Target |
| Adjustable curtain rod, or no-drill brackets | $10–$20 | Walmart, IKEA, Home Depot |
| One large art piece: thrifted frame plus a print | $8–$20 | Thrift stores, IKEA, Walmart |
| Two lidded under-bed or closet bins | $10–$12 | Walmart, Target, IKEA |
| Total | $58–$100 |
Prices are approximate as of October 2026 and vary by store and region. Prices are approximate as of October 2026, for generic item types at the stores listed. Most Dollar Tree items are $1.25, with some at $1.50–$5. Thrift and Facebook Marketplace prices vary widely by city and condition.
Time: about 4–6 hours, most of it decluttering.
Declutter first, then buy
Work in this order: floor, flat surfaces, closet, walls. Bag up donations and get them out of the house the same day, so they don't drift back into the room.
Matching hangers are the cheapest visual fix in a closet. Thirty to fifty slim hangers in one color line clothes up evenly and save rail space. It sounds minor until you open the doors.
Lidded bins go under the bed or on the closet shelf for off-season clothes and spare bedding. Measure the clearance under your bed frame before you buy.
Hang curtains high and wide
Bob Vila's curtain guide suggests mounting the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame (higher if the ceiling is less than 12 inches away) and extending it 3–6 inches or more past the frame on each side. The window looks larger and the room looks taller.
Measure from the rod to the floor and buy the standard length (84, 95 or 108 inches) that ends within about half an inch of the floor. Linen-look polyester in white or oatmeal softens the light without blocking it.
Can't drill? The no-drill curtain rods and blinds guide compares tension rods and brackets that grip the window frame.
One large art piece
One big piece calms a room more than six small ones. A thrifted frame at least 18 x 24 inches with a new print inside does the job.
Center it over the bed. A common styling rule of thumb puts the bottom edge 8–10 inches above the headboard or the top of your pillows.

Plan C: Bold Color
This plan is for a bedroom that feels beige and forgettable. It puts color in two places, a painted nightstand and a panel behind the bed, and repeats it once in the textiles.
Budget breakdown: Plan C: Bold color ($52–$103)
$52–$103
| Item | Price range | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Secondhand nightstand or small side table | $5–$25 | Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores |
| Furniture paint in a saturated color (sample to quart size) | $10–$20 | Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart |
| Degreasing cleaner, brush and foam roller | $4–$8 | Dollar Tree, Walmart |
| Peel-and-stick wallpaper, 1 roll, for a headboard-size panel | $25–$35 | Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon |
| Two pillow covers in the accent color | $8–$15 | Target, Walmart, HomeGoods |
| Total | $52–$103 |

Time: 1 weekend. Painting takes about 2 hours of work, plus drying and cure time from the paint label.
The painted nightstand
Look for solid wood or sturdy veneer with a smooth, intact finish on Facebook Marketplace or at a thrift store. Avoid pieces with peeling or chipping paint. EPA lists refinishing old furniture among the activities that can expose you to lead, so leave any chipped older piece where it is.
Clean the piece with a degreaser, let it dry, then paint in thin coats with a foam roller on flat surfaces and a brush on edges. The step-by-step method, including which paints stick without sanding, is in how to paint furniture without sanding.
Paint releases solvents as it dries. EPA advises following label instructions and providing as much ventilation as possible while painting, so open a window and run a fan. Paint outdoors or in a garage if you can, and let the piece dry before it comes back into the bedroom.
The peel-and-stick headboard panel
Instead of covering a whole wall, cover a panel the width of the bed and about 4 ft tall behind it. A queen is 60 inches wide, so that panel is about 20 sq ft. Check the square footage on the roll and add extra for pattern matching.
This reads as a headboard and costs less than most real ones. For more ways to fake one, see cheap headboard alternatives.
Color ideas: a deep green panel with a terracotta nightstand, navy with mustard, or brown with cream. If brown appeals, the chocolate brown bedroom on a $100 budget builds a whole room around it.
The trade-off
Cheap peel-and-stick shows seams up close, and it may lift on textured walls or in humid rooms. Pick a busy pattern to hide seams, and smooth each strip from the center out with a plastic smoother or a credit card.

Order of Operations
Doing things in the right order saves you from repainting or re-hanging. This sequence works for all three plans:
- Declutter and clean. Including the floor under the bed.
- Start messy projects first. Paint the nightstand outside the bedroom on day one so it can dry and cure while you do everything else.
- Walls. Put up the peel-and-stick panel before the bed goes back against the wall.
- Windows. Hang the rod and curtains while the floor is still clear.
- Lighting. Swap bulbs and place the lamp, then check the room at night.
- Rug, then the bed. Rug down, bed back in place, then make it fully.
- Art and accessories last. These are the easiest things to move once you've lived with the room for a few days.
How to Style the Bed
The bed is most of what you see when you walk in. A consistent layering formula makes cheap bedding look planned.
The pillow formula
- Twin or full: one or two sleeping pillows, plus one throw pillow.
- Queen: two sleeping pillows, two shams or larger pillows standing in front, plus one lumbar or two small throws. That's four to six total.
- King: three sleeping pillows or two euro shams in back, two standard pillows, plus one lumbar.
Mix one solid, one texture and one pattern, and keep them all in the same two or three colors. Stand the back row upright against the headboard or wall, and set the front row slightly overlapping.
The rest of the layers
- Fitted sheet pulled tight, flat sheet tucked.
- Duvet or comforter laid flat, then folded back about a third from the top, so the sheet shows.
- Throw folded in thirds lengthwise across the foot.
If you love the look of candles on a nightstand, use flameless ones. USFA advises keeping real candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn and blowing them out when you leave the room, and bedding is right there.

Lighting That Feels Warm
Swapping one bulb changes a bedroom faster than any purchase in these plans.
ENERGY STAR's bulb checklist explains that light color is measured in Kelvin. Lower numbers look yellowish and higher numbers look whiter or bluer.
It lists 2700K–3000K as warm or soft white, the standard color of incandescent bulbs, and 3500K–4100K as better for kitchens and work spaces. Buy 2700K for the bedroom.
For brightness, shop by lumens, not watts. The FTC notes that a traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces about 800 lumens, and an LED can produce the same light using about 9 watts. Around 800 lumens is plenty for a bedside lamp you read by.
Place the lamp so the bottom of the shade sits near eye level when you're sitting up in bed. That way you see the glow, not the bare bulb. If there's no outlet near the bed, the renter lighting without hardwiring guide covers plug-in sconces and rechargeable lamps.

Common Mistakes
- Mixing plans. A little of each plan reads as clutter. Choose one and finish it.
- A rug that's too small. A tiny rug floating in the middle of the floor looks like an afterthought. Put it where your feet land, or tuck it partly under the bed.
- Curtains hung at the window frame. It shrinks the window. Go higher and wider, and make sure the panels reach the floor.
- Bright white LEDs. A 5000K "daylight" bulb in a bedside lamp makes the room feel like an office at night.
- Too many small frames. One large piece over the bed looks calmer and costs less than a gallery wall.
- Skipping the test patch. Test peel-and-stick wallpaper and paint on a hidden spot before committing.
- Buying before measuring. Curtain length, rug size and bin height all depend on numbers you can get for free.
Which Plan Should You Pick?
- Your room feels cold or bare: Plan A, hotel-cozy.
- Your room feels cluttered or stressful: Plan B, calm minimal.
- Your room feels boring: Plan C, bold color.
Whichever you choose, you'll likely have a few dollars left over. Spend them on a second warm bulb or better pillow inserts before anything decorative. When you're ready for the next room, the decorate on a budget guide has price tables for every room.
Frequently asked questions
How can I make my bedroom look nice with no money?
Declutter every flat surface, wash and iron or steam the bedding, and make the bed fully each morning. Move the bed to face the door if the layout allows, shop your other rooms for one lamp and one piece of art, and swap any cool-white bulb for a warm one you already own.
How do I make my bedroom cozy on a budget?
Layer textiles and lower the light. Add a knit throw at the foot of the bed, two pillows in different textures, a small rug where your feet land, and a bedside lamp with a warm white (about 2700K) bulb. Turn the overhead light off in the evening.
What color light bulb is best for a bedroom?
Warm white or soft white. ENERGY STAR lists 2700K–3000K as warm or soft white, the standard color of incandescent bulbs. Cooler 3500K–4100K bulbs are better for kitchens and work spaces. For a bedside lamp, about 800 lumens matches an old 60-watt bulb.
How many pillows should be on a queen bed?
A simple formula is two sleeping pillows, two shams or larger pillows in front, and one lumbar or two small throw pillows: four to six total. More than that and you spend every night moving pillows to the floor.
Can I put peel-and-stick wallpaper in a rental?
Usually it is removable, but it can pull flat or fresh paint off the wall. Test a small piece in a hidden spot for a few days first, follow the maker's instructions, and check your lease and local tenant resources before covering a whole wall.
